Helmut Newton, Cardin Gres, 1971 Harper's & Queen

Helmut Newton’s Menacing Marais 1971

August 1, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

I must admit I’m not a huge 70’s aficionado. I did go through a stage at university wearing long indian dresses, 70’s flares from Camden market and this ill-fitting sheepskin coat – but generally it isn’t my favourite style era. However, my mother in law gave me this 1971 Harper’s & Queen, and I must say this beautiful runway edit, shot by Helmut Newton in the Marais, has me re-thinking the 70’s. I love the prints and scarfs. I’d love […]

The Five Year Rule of the She-Serpent

July 25, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

My mistress is very sensitive to the clothes she wears. She’s a phenomenon. If she has a lively dress she’s lively, like today. If she has a shy dress she’s shy, like yesterday. And everything changes, everything: she talks in a different way, she’s somebody else. She’s dressed in sparkling and very close-fitting green scales: the dress ends in a thin sharp tail. From the neckline a kind of snake emerges and continues in spirals twice around her neck, it’s […]

Ulyana Sergeenko, Fall 2012, black full skirt, mohair jumper and satchel

The Red Riding Hood Collection

July 20, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

I watched Red Riding Hood the other night and whilst the story was a bit thin on the ground, the costumes and scenery were breathtaking. It’s real woodland fairy tale stuff. During the week I took a peek at Ulyana Sergeenko’s Fall 2012 collection. As you know I’m a HUGE fan, I love her folksy 1940’s style, always accessorised with little booties. (If you think the perspex heels look tretcherous just take a look at these – better still, watch […]

The Return of the Perspex Heel

July 18, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to showcase the 1941 perspex heeled shoes below, from the book Fashion at the time of Fascisim. They just look so remarkably modern, particularly the wedges, that you really wouldn’t look twice if they appeared in the pages of Vogue. And indeed this month’s Vogue’s Catwalk Guide has given me the perfect opportunity to put these babies back into the limelight. From Yves St Laurent to Chanel to Rodarte, perspex is the material “de […]

The Chelsea Hotel, New York

Between The Sheets At The Chelsea

June 29, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel, You were talking so brave and so free. Giving me head on an unmade bed While the limousines wait in the street And those were the reasons and that was New York, (Leonard Cohen)  This was one crazy hotel! Penned by Leonard Cohen, lived in by a host of creative types from Andy Warhol and Arthur Miller (after his divorce from Marilyn), to Quentin Crisp, Jackson Pollock and Janis Joplin. In this […]

Edie Campbell, Patti Boyd, 60's makeup, Lisa Eldridge. lula Magazine

Pattie Boyd vs Edie Campbell

June 27, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

Lisa Eldridge, the lady behind Marilyn’s Makeup Secrets, did a fantastic shoot for Lula Magazine with Edie Campbell, recreating a 1960’s “How to..” beauty feature with Pattie Boyd. Lisa writes in her blog: Gorgeous Edie Campbell was just perfect for this shoot. As well as bearing a resemblance to Pattie, her face takes 60’s make-up so damn well! Lula has always been one of my favourite magazines as I just love everything about it. Its SO girly and beautiful and […]

Weimar Republic cabaret, Herr Kettners, 1920s black lace flapper dress, burlesque

Sequins from Weimar

June 25, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

Our step back to the Weimar Republic at Herr Kettner’s was most enjoyable. The dress code stated “1920s Berlin, moustachioed dandies, dizzy flappers, monocled counts, decadent aesthetes, firebrand radicals, apoplectic Teutonic military officers, predatory cross-dressers, itinerant jazz musicians, black or white tie”. So of course, a little research was required, as seen below – courtesy of Marlene Dietrich, Henry and June, Cabaret and some decadent 1920’s fashion illustrations. Oh and the rather mischievous Clara Bow: Top illustration by me Marlene […]

The Alcazar, Seville, Instagram

Lessons in Design

June 11, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

Sometimes there’s nothing like a good old-fashioned dose of historical design to hit the inspiration button like a thunder bolt. Seville was no exception – in particular the Royal Palace or Alcazar. It was truly jaw-dropping. (Although rather difficult to find – that could, however, just be my husband and I – we must have passed the same horse at least five times and were way to embarrassed to ask where this incredible attraction was housed.) Just when I was […]

Coco Rocha Projector, The Cinemagraphs

The Cinemagraph

June 8, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

Following on perfectly from my dalliance with The Rivoli, one of my wonderful partners-in-crime, Linda, offered to write a guest post, and I bit her hand off before she changed her mind. Not only is this lady an amazing dancer, and leaves us breathless with her unique style when she breezes into the studio, but she is also a technical wizard. Not fair, I say! So sit back and enjoy a “behind the scenes” look at the technical phenomena that’s […]
