Denim Rules

September 29, 2014 by igetakickoutofyou

Denim inspiration can’t get any better than Current & Elliot’s “Denim Story“. The book, published by Rizzoli, features cut offs, boyfriends to bell-bottoms, dungarees to skinnies – it’s denim heaven! And if your a retro queen, never fear, there are some fabulous images of James Dean, Marilyn, Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot. The only thing missing is Nick Kamen in his boxers! (David Gandy take note, less is definitely more 😉 ) All photos by Hilary Walsh

Look But Don’t Touch

March 8, 2013 by igetakickoutofyou

I have a thing for bare brick walls. In my dream home I would have a feature wall with a gorgeously aged and textured brick wall. But let’s face it unless your living in a factory conversion or a rare original apartment in Copenhagen or Paris, antique fixtures and aged brick are hard to find and, I would imagine, a devil to maintain. But if you want to fake it – now you can. There are some seriously clever wallpapers […]

Emmanuelle: Marilyn or Blondie?

September 20, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

I remember going to see a french film in my first year at university with my new roomate. Neither of us could speak french but she told me she wanted to see it because her brother thought the french actress in it was the most beautiful woman in the world. Well, if she was that beautiful I wanted to see her too. Eighteen years on I still think this french actress is the most beautiful woman in the world. Emmanuelle […]

Marilyn – Pin Up vs Portrait

August 6, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

This weekend was the 50th anniversary of Marilyn’s death. I wanted to do a “10 favourite images” but a) I couldn’t narrow it down to 10 and b) there seemed such a distinction between the pin up shots and the portrait shots, I thought I’d make a point of it. So which do you prefer – the pin-up or portraits? From Pin Up Photo: Andre de Dienes Playboy 1953 Photo: Milton Greene Photo: Sam Shaw Photo: Milton Greene To Portrait […]

The Chelsea Hotel, New York

Between The Sheets At The Chelsea

June 29, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel, You were talking so brave and so free. Giving me head on an unmade bed While the limousines wait in the street And those were the reasons and that was New York, (Leonard Cohen)  This was one crazy hotel! Penned by Leonard Cohen, lived in by a host of creative types from Andy Warhol and Arthur Miller (after his divorce from Marilyn), to Quentin Crisp, Jackson Pollock and Janis Joplin. In this […]

Marilyn’s Makeup Secrets – Part 2 The Tips

May 25, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

So we’ve seen Whitey’s treasures of Marilyn, now time to get down to business. How did they do it? Lisa Eldridge, a renowned makeup artist, made this fantastic video which takes you through all the steps. (She also does some great tutorials on makeup basics and evening looks.) (If you want a laugh, check out some of the comments – it seemed to provoke a bit of a scrap! She also does some great videos on makeup basics and evening looks.) But […]

Marilyn’s Makeup Secrets – Part 1 The Private Collection

May 23, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

I’ve always been slightly obsessed with Marilyn’s makeup. She was no chameleon – she was the champion of her own look. Honed for years under the guidance of a man called “Whitey”. “You don’t just wake up in the morning and wash your face and comb your hair and go out in the street and look like Marilyn Monroe. She knows every trick of the beauty trade”. Milton Greene “Whitey” Snyder started to do Marilyn’s makeup in 1948, for her […]

Dresses and Controversy in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

February 6, 2012 by igetakickoutofyou

It was a bitter night and as we reached the screening, snow was really starting to fall heavily. However, there nestled in a little courtyard off Brook Street was our outdoor screening of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ at HUSH, complete with fairy lights, candles, hot water bottles, blankets and hot chocolate…….oh, and most important of all popcorn! We all agreed that if someone had planned this as a first date, we would have been super impressed. I hadn’t ever watched the […]

A Week with Marilyn – The Ingenious Breast Dress

December 1, 2011 by igetakickoutofyou

Ahh……loved, loved , loved “A Week With Marilyn”. Michelle Williams is incredible – absolutely breathtaking – in fact I’m going to see it again! One of the things I want to pay particular attention to is the dress that Marilyn Monroe  (Michelle) wears when she steps off the plane in England. You’ll know what I mean if you have the seen the film – it’s a total scene stealer. The construction of the bust line on this dress is seriously ingenious. […]
