Lessons in Still-Life (Vignette)

August 30, 2013 by igetakickoutofyou

Anyone who is in awe of beautiful still-life arrangements in the home, but also acutely aware of how tricky it can be, should take a look at Kara Rosenlund’s blog and her brilliant video on styling a plain white shelf. Genius and inspirational! Kara is a props stylist and buyer, who also runs vignette (still-life) workshops in Australia. You can see from her blog and portfolio, she is a total master. I’m also just a little bit in love with […]

Marc Lagrange, Diamonds and Pearls

LaGrange’s Delta of Venus

August 20, 2013 by igetakickoutofyou

Delving into Marc LaGrange’s “Diamonds and Pearls” is a bit like delving into Anais Nin’s “Delta of Venus”. Anything is possible! Part eroticism, part burlesque and part grunge, his work has touch of Helmut Newton meets a Maharaja’s Folie Bergére. Sepia shots of kohl-eyed, diamond adorned, voluptuous bodies against gritty or theatrical backdrops. A particularly magnetic combination. Personally, I prefer the single portraits like the ones below, but some of the scenarios LaGrange cooks up are more than a little intriguing and, […]

Postcards With An Edge

August 9, 2013 by igetakickoutofyou

Between bouts of fighting with my children in Mallorca, over inflatable dolphins and alligators, I spotted these traditional postcards. All were taken by Arxiu Bestard/ Casa Bestard, which houses the largest archive of Mallorcan photography from the late nineteenth century up until 2006. How ingenious! I don’t really send postcards, it almost seems quite an outdated idea, or is that just me? But these are something else and certainly too beautiful to leave to the uncertainties of the post! Formentor […]

At Home With Helena Part II

August 5, 2013 by igetakickoutofyou

Want an insight into eclectic dressing? Take a look at this interview with Helena Christensen for FutureClaw magazine, where Helena takes on the role as stylist, and creates an intimate portrayal of her kind of living. Similar to At Home With Helena Part I, let’s face it, who can resist another look at such gorgeousness? I think I just might prefer this photoshoot – what do you think? HC “There are some of my favourite items in there, yeah. It […]

Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, Ian Berry, London 1970

Birkin by Berry

July 4, 2013 by igetakickoutofyou

I was on the Yoox site, looking for a jacket (nothing new there!), and I came across this gorgeous framed print for sale, of Jane Birkin by Ian Berry. Clearly I couldn’t leave it at that, so I had to take a peak at the rest of this intimate collection. Taken in London 1970, it features a very natural Serge and Jane, with her daughter Kate Barry. They look like any other couple wandering the streets in the 1970’s. Only […]

George Hurrell, Jane Russell

George Hurrell – Shadowcaster

June 3, 2013 by igetakickoutofyou

“A Hurrell portrait is to the ordinary publicity stills what a Rolls-Royce is to a roller-skate”.          This is how George Hurrell, MGM’s main man, was described in Esquire magazine in 1936. Marlene Dietrich Veronica Lake George swept into town with the intention of becoming a painter, only once he started photographing heiresses, with his signature dramatic spotlight, creating sculptured cheekbones and glowing skin, he never looked back. Carole Lombard By 1929 he had a contract with […]

Somerset House, Boden Style

May 9, 2013 by igetakickoutofyou

I have just returned from Somerset House, where my good friend Emma and I were able to sample preview pieces from the next Boden Autumn Winter 2013 range. Forgetting the clothes for just a second, the styling for this event was “amazing”. The rooms were decked out with loads of quirky details which have just given me inspiration overload. What do you make of this? So now I know what to do with David’s collection of old tapes! And I […]

Juergen Teller Adventure

April 10, 2013 by igetakickoutofyou

Apologies it has been at least two weeks since I’ve blogged and I’m usually a lot more punctual. The reason being a) maybe it’s the weather but I haven’t been hugely inspired lately b) the builders have arrived and I’m trying to pack up my kitchen so that it will fit into a tiny study upstairs and c) I’ve been doing a lot of drawing for something called Project X which I will elaborate on in a future post. Anyway, […]

Look But Don’t Touch

March 8, 2013 by igetakickoutofyou

I have a thing for bare brick walls. In my dream home I would have a feature wall with a gorgeously aged and textured brick wall. But let’s face it unless your living in a factory conversion or a rare original apartment in Copenhagen or Paris, antique fixtures and aged brick are hard to find and, I would imagine, a devil to maintain. But if you want to fake it – now you can. There are some seriously clever wallpapers […]
